What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. It is used to classify underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity in adults.
How is BMI Calculated?
The formula is:
BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m))²
For example, a person who weighs 70 kg and is 170 cm tall has a BMI of:
BMI = 70 / (1.7 × 1.7) = 24.22
BMI Categories:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight: BMI between 25 – 29.9
- Obese: BMI 30 or more
Note: BMI is a general guideline and doesn't consider muscle mass, bone density, or overall health.
